Sustainable and Future-Proof Office Building
The AFAS Clubhouse in Leusden consists of multiple buildings with a total area of 62,000 m² and was completed in 2020. The complex includes a professional theater, offices, hospitality facilities, studios, and sports and training areas.
One ambition was central to the design: a future-proof and sustainable building, suitable for an increasingly digitizing society. Successfully, the AFAS Clubhouse is among the most sustainable office buildings in the Netherlands.
The Challenge: Moisture Problems in the Air Handling Unit
Supply and Maintenance of Air Filters
During the construction, Vlint, through installer Homij (now Hanab Installation Technology), was engaged for the supply of air filters for the air handling installations. Also after completion, when maintenance was taken over by the AFAS team itself, Vlint remained a regular partner for filtration.
'Dirty Filter' Notifications in High Humidity
After the commissioning of the complex, a challenge arose. One of the air handling units, located near the pond on the premises, regularly gave a 'dirty filter' notification during high humidity (for instance, on misty days).
Consequences: increased energy consumption and additional strain on the system
Increase in resistance (∆p) and energy consumption
Too much water in the filters leads to droplet formation, which causes higher resistance (∆p), resulting in less air passing through the filters. The fans then need to work harder to maintain proper ventilation in the building, leading to increased energy consumption. Additionally, such a level of moisture in the air handling units can negatively impact the lifespan of the units and their internal components, for instance, due to rust formation.
The Solution: Nanowave Filters by Vlint
Knowledge-Driven Advice from Filtration Expertise
Together with Olaf Schipper, filtration product manager at Vlint, a search was made for a sustainable and reliable solution. Based on practical experience and technical analysis, Olaf advised replacing the current filters with Nanowave air filters. They are made of special nanofibers that lower resistance while simultaneously increasing efficiency. Nanowave filters are designed with a focus on:
Successful Test Case in Practice
Better Performance in High Humidity
In addition to the above benefits, Vlint expected that the filter properties of the Nanowave filters would also perform better in fog and high humidity. The filters were installed as a test case. And what was the result? The ‘dirty filter’ warnings did not occur! On two particularly humid, foggy days, the ∆p (resistance) was read, and it remained stable. The fine nanofibers evenly distribute mist particles across the filter surface, preventing droplet formation and moisture accumulation.
Measurable and Stable Results
The fine nanofibers evenly distribute mist particles across the filter surface, preventing moisture accumulation. The results confirmed the expectation:
Result: 70% energy savings and longer service life
The Nanowave filters have now been in use for an extended period. Romeo van Baak (AFAS) is positive about the results so far. In this specific situation, an expected energy saving of approximately 70% is achieved. AFAS looks forward to the long-term results and is open to further innovations in sustainability.
Lower maintenance and higher reliability
Where standard filters need to be replaced annually, Nanowave filters last up to three times longer. This ensures: less maintenance, lower total costs, and more continuity and reliability.Looking to save on energy and maintenance?
